External hard drives are notoriously vulnerable to failure in the USB/disk-controller electronics. Usually the hard drive inside is okay. You can test this theory by taking it apart, remove the hard drive and plug the drive into something like this adapter. Four out of four failed external hard drives that I’ve tried worked when I tried that.
