Why does induction motor have high starting current?

2 Answers

Answer :

Induction  motors  have  high  starting  current   because  its  rotor was at rest  thus  thus  it must  withdraw  more  current  to  overcome  rotors force of  inertia.

Answer :

In induction motor , the flux produce is quadrature to the applied voltage. Since when we are going to start motor , there is no flux present inside . So in order to lets say compensate it , at first cycle of current it will produce two times of rated flux . And during that time when flux crosses rated limit , the core will saturate and it draws multiple times of current to further increase flux. So that is reason for high starting current in induction motor
