Mountains, rivers, and oceans all hindered early trade as they were not easy to cross. Dense forests presented their own challenges because they made it difficult to see very far ahead where you were going and getting lost was a very real risk. Deserts also presented significant challenges since the animals used to transport goods needed water. Frigid climes also presented challenges due to the physical hazards of exposure to the cold.
