How to wire a Ceiling Fan
To wire a ceiling fan is a relatively easy project. Usually, it is similar to working on replacing an existing light fixture. However, you will also need to check the wiring requirements of your house electrical box. To give you an idea how to do this, follow the general instructions below. You should also read through the information contained in your ceiling fan’s manual before you begin.
Decide a location for your fan. Afterwards, turn off the circuit breaker or remove its fuse and your existing ceiling fixture.
Know if your existing electrical workbox will provide you support for your fan. Check if your workbox has metal cross braces span between its two joints. If not, prepare a 2″x4″ to put in between the joints. Mount it to touch the top of your workbox. Use some screws and a screw gun to install the wood in place. Use as well 1″ drywall screws to secure the box to the wood brace, or you may also try installing a metal cross brace all the way through the rough opening of your ceiling. At this point, install an approved workbox to your metal brace.
Assemble the ceiling fan based on the vendor’s manual. Before you hang it, install the mounting bracket and attach it to the workbox. Its better if your fan has a hanging frame since this would allow you to fasten the ball end of the down rod in place. But if your fan comes in a bracket with a “J” hook, hang its motor housing during wire hooking.
Using the wire nuts, hook up the wires by connecting 2 white wires to the 2 ground wires. This instruction is usually provided in the wiring diagram of the manual.
Once finished with the wiring, assemble other parts of the fan based on the manual. You will need to mount a canopy to the top of the rod and attach the fan blades to the fan itself. When installing a light kit, take away the cover on the bottom of the fan and mount the light kit. Check the manual to properly assemble and install the light kit.
Turn the breaker back on and test the fan. If the fan starts working, check if you have a loose wire connection. In case your fan vibrates or shakes, check if the blades are balanced.
