How to Keep a Positive Attitude
Keeping a positive attitude can be hard to do when you got up at the wrong side of the bed, everything seems to be going wrong and you’re just irritated with everything. Just remember that you always have a choice to wallow in your misery or to look at the brighter side of life. The trick is to know how to keep on the side of positivity. Here’s how.
Be Proactive
Many people succumb to depression or wallow in self-pity because they feel like they have little to no control over their negative situation. Don’t let yourself be victimized by your own unfortunate circumstances! Sit down and prepare a plan of action. Even if things don’t go your way, you will always have that pride that you did something to change your circumstances.
Think Positive
Surround yourself with things that make you feel more cheerful, no matter how bad your day is. Upbeat music, happy family pictures, your favorite drink and snack at hand…all are small simple ways to give you a boost. In addition to that, list the things that are getting you down and for every item in the list, put something positive that’s going on in your life right now. Assure yourself that whatever the hurdles, you will surely pass through it with flying colors.
When you’re already starting to pity yourself, think of the things that you are grateful for. Every so often, we take for granted the many blessings we have in life. So take a pause and remember that there are still so many things in life we should be thankful for!
Find an Outlet
Negative energy usually begets negative energy. Whenever you yell at someone or lash out to release that negativity, you pass it on to someone else. Find a safe outlet where you can put all your rage in. Take a long walk, throw some punches at a punching bag, go to the ladies’ room and stomp childishly. Sometimes all we need to do is let it all out, but not at the expense of other people.
Another way to release your anger is to write down all your angry thoughts on paper. Instead of hurting someone else’s feelings (especially if it’s unwarranted), burn the paper with the angry thoughts. Let the anger go as the paper burns, and make amends with the person you’ve been fighting with.
Be Flexible
People who get easily stressed are those who schedule their lives to a tee. Being a more flexible person not only lessens stress, but it also provides you with new challenges and a change in your routine. Face every problem like it’s a challenge, not a burden.
Avoid Stress
Try not to walk into a situation where you know you will be stressed. Conversely, if you find yourself in a situation that is unacceptable or something you cannot handle, simply remove yourself from the situation.
Smile and Laugh
Make an effort to smile and laugh when you are feeling down. Sooner or later you’ll find yourself doing these two things genuinely. Surrounding yourself with similarly positive people and friends can make this easier on you. So smile!
Expand Your Horizons
Develop yourself more as a person, and discover that there is more to life than your negative feelings. Take up a hobby or develop your own sprituality. Find a place where you can find your center and be calm. These things won’t come easily, but if you are dedicated enough, you will surely find them.
