How to Password Protect a File
We all have secure computer files we want to protect from unwanted and unauthorized access. One of the lines of defense for securing files is a safe and secure password that you can use to protect personal files or specific directories on a shared computer, or a computer wired to a public or common network. Here are some ways to password-protect sensitive personal data files.
Why Protect Files?
There are two reasons why you should protect personal files:
Thwart unauthorized access. In many shared computers or public networks, some users may be able to access your files. One way to protect your files from being modified or viewed by unauthorized users is to protect them with a secure password.
Security. If you work with a lot of files and archives that need to be secured, password protection is part of best practices.
Application-Specific Passwords
Except for data encryption and third-party software, passwords cannot be assigned to specific files and directories by default in Microsoft Windows. Most applications like word processors, spreadsheet utilities, and office suites offer password protection when you use the “Save” or “Save As” function. Consult the “Help” file or database of the specific program to check if the program supports password protection.
There are many third-party password protection tools available on the Internet, and you can get them either for free or purchase one after a limited trial period or license. You may want to check out some of these products if you really need the security offered by commercial password protection.
Default Encryption
One way that you can protect your files without passwords is to use the default encryption utility offered by Microsoft Windows:

Click “Advanced” on the “Attributes” area.
Click the check box for “Encrypt contents to secure data.”
Save all changes.
