How to Clean Bathtub Rings
Bathtub rings are a particular kind of dirt in your bathtub that can really make it look nasty. A bathtub ring is a ring of scum and dirt that forms around the edges of the tub. It may require patience and elbow grease, but you’ll get rid of it sooner or later. Here’s how to clean bathtub rings.
Determine what caused the bathtub ring. A brownish-red stain means that the ring was caused by rust. A filmy ring indicates soap scum. A blue, green or white ring of scum means that the ring was caused by lime scale. Knowing the cause will bring an easier solution to the bathtub ring cleaning.
Vinegar and Peroxide Mix. Use rubber gloves when using this solution. Mix four tablespoons flour with four tablespoons white vinegar and eight tablespoons of peroxide. Apply the solution to the stain and leave for several hours. Brush with a scrub and rinse.
Commercial Cleaners. There are a lot of products out there in the market that can clean those pesky bathtub rings effectively. Westley’s Bleche-Wite (actually a degreaser for tires), Mr. Clean Eraser, oven cleaners, Super Clean (also an automotive cleaner), Mr. Clean Magic Reach are just some of the products that you can choose from. Just apply and scrub away.
Baking Soda. Baking Soda is another way to clean the stains without potentially causing harm to pets or children. Simply sprinkle baking soda on top of the ring and scrub thoroughly.
Salt and Lemon. If you’re dealing with a rusty bathtub ring, you can use a combination of salt and lemon. Sprinkle a generous amount of salt on top of the stain and coat with lemon juice. Let it sit overnight, wipe and rinse.
Shampoo for Oily Hair. If you have some unused shampoo formulated for oily hair, you can use it to get rid of bathtub rings from soap scum. Apply the shampoo on the stain and wipe away using a sponge.
Bleach. Spray bleach on the bathtub ring and let it sit for a few hours. Scrub and rinse it away after. Another way to use bleach is to fill the tub with water and two tablespoons of bleach. Leave the water overnight and drain. This will make cleaning easier for you throughout the bathtub.
To prevent soap scum from forming in your bathtub, switch to a non-soap wash. Baby wash and shower gel are two great alternatives to soap bars.
