How to Install a Ceiling Fan
The first step in installing is to determine the most appropriate distance between the fan blades and your floor. You will need a measuring device in order to accurately do this. You need to then subtract the distance between the entire height of the fan and the ceiling from the distance you have measured between the floor and the fan blades.
It is highly advised to keep the distance between the floor and the fan blades to at least 7 feet. Clearances vary depending on the blades.
The next step is switching off the power at the light’s circuit breaker. You can determine the center. This is achieved by snapping a set of diagonal chalk lines. These lines will serve as your references.
At this point, you should determine if the lines cross right below a ceiling joist. Drill a hole big enough for the junction box to be inserted. Make holes on the side if it is located next to the joist. You can then attach it there.
You may also install between joists. Affix the box to a 2″ x 4″ header. This is placed between joists. It is also possible to insert a 2″ x 4″ header through the junction box’s hole. Nail it to each joist. A special beam mount is then used. This will mount a fan to a ceiling that is beamed.
Afterwards, the fan is ready to be assembled. The assembly process varies depending on the brand of ceiling fan purchased. Install the hanger pipe by drilling a hole. The hole should be right on top of the motor.
Next, you need to identify the wires that are carefully drawn in the center. The pipe can be secured with the use of a set-screw since you wouldn’t want the pipe of your ceiling fan to move and eventually fall out which can be dangerous. This is done after it has been threaded down.
The next step is to place the motor in a spot where it will stay stable. This makes it easier to attach the fan blade. The styrene foam that comes with the package can also be used. A two-pronged attachment is drawn up carefully and securely. The threads may get damaged if the attachment is too tight. This can also crush the laminated blade material.
At this point, you may now mount the fan to the box. Use screws and lock washers. You can already wire the unit and slip the cover to its full length.
Finally, make sure the fan wires are connected to their respective house wires. The fan must be grounded to the metal box and to the fan itself.
