How to Use Crutches
A nasty sprain or one broken leg shouldn’t keep you from your daily activities, because you can use crutches. Whether the injury is temporary or permanent, crutches can give you ample support and help you move. Using them is difficult than it seems, so to help you out, here’s how to use crutches properly.
What You’ll Need:
A good, strong pair of crutches
Consult Your Therapist First
You can’t just buy any pair of crutches. You must first consult with your therapist, doctor or casting professional on which kind to buy. He or she can also fit your crutches, making sure that it suits your condition and supports you just fine. Your therapist can also give you one-on-one instructions, and even help you move around for the first few times.
Getting The Right Fit
To know if you have the right crutches, here are a few things you should look for.
The crutches’ hand grips should be at an even level with your hip.
The crutches’ top must be at least one or two inches down your armpits when you stand upright.
When holding the hand grips, your elbows should bend slightly.
Lean your shoulders slightly forward when using your crutches.
Use your hands to absorb the weight, while keeping the top of the crutches tight against your sides.
Don’t rest your armpits on top of the crutches, because this can irritate the skin there.
Make sure the crutch padding isn’t torn or worn.
Walking On Crutches
Now comes the most challenging part: using your crutches for walking. This can be very difficult and tiring at first but once you get used to it, you’ll be fine. Here’s how.
Sit up, and put the crutches beside you. As you stand slowly, grab the crutches. Put the right crutch under your right armpit, and the left on the other. Hold the hand grip firmly as you do this.
Before you take a step, put both crutches in front of you. Carefully shift your weight, then put your healthy leg forward. Pull the injured foot forward.
Take small steps, no bigger than 1 1/2 feet. Rushing isn’t a good idea when using crutches.
Rest if you’re tired.
When opening a door, make sure the door clears your feet when you open it. Open the door with one hand, while supporting yourself with the other. As the door swings open, hold the two crutches, while placing one crutch’s tip against the door, keeping it open. Go through the door.
Crutches Safety Tips
Watch out from clutter or loose items on the floor, like toys, rugs and electrical cords.
If you need to carry things, put them in a messenger bag (sling-type) or a backpack.
Use ramps and elevators as much as possible, and stay away from stairs.
Simplify your home, so the things you need will be easily accessible.
Being injured can be depressing, but it’s not a good idea to stay in bed all the time. As long as you know how to properly use crutches, you can still go out and explore the world.
