How to Pitch in Softball
They say that in softball, the pitcher is essential, because he is the one who controls the game’s pace and the outcome. This is why it’s a good idea to know how to properly pitch in softball. It’s not very difficult, as long as you know what to do.
What You’ll Need:
Softball
Open field
Pitching-mound and home plate
Glove
umpire or catcher
Procedure:
It’s always good to practice softball in the traditional softball field, with a home plate and a pitching mound. It makes it easier for you to gauge how much you’ve improved. If there’s a field near you, ask if you can practice on it. If not, then just find a wide open field to practice on. Also, ask a friend to be the umpire or catcher.

If you’re on a softball field, stand behind the rubber, your feet a shoulder’s width apart. It’s also okay if only the right foot is on the rubber. Your standing position can change depending on which angle you feel most comfortable with.
Hold the ball using a four seam grip. If you don’t know how to do this, here’s how: Put it in the palm of your hand, with your four fingers along the seam’s long side. Make sure the pads of your finger are resting just past the laces at the “U”’s side.
Before you start with the pitching motion, put the glove and ball together. Keep both hands in front of you, just below your waist.
Start the back swing. Get the ball from your glove, using your other (pitching) hand. Afterwards, swing your hand back, until it is level.
As you transfer your body’s weight from your back leg to your front foot, move your arm forward. Then, push the foot that’s on the front against the pitching rubber’s edge. As it comes forward, keep your arm straight. Then, open your hips, as the arm makes its rotation. You’ll end up in a sideways stance.
Release the softball, at least at hip level or slightly lower. As you release it, close your hips. Your wrist should be back and your arm outstretched. Bend your elbow between 15 to 20 degrees.
As you release the ball, put your fingers behind it. Keep your posture straight, and your shoulders level as you release.
Follow through and relax your arms. End the pitch with your pitching hand at least waist level or higher, moving to the shoulder.
