Watering plants can be quite tiresome, especially for huge gardens. You will have to walk through the maze of shrubs, blooms and rocks just to sprinkle every garden plant with water. Thanks to human ingenuity, the sprinkler system was developed. Make one yourself so that you will view your garden as a relaxing place, which is the way it should be.
A sprinkler system is a group of interconnected water sprinklers that are joined by a long plastic tube. Just like a garden hose, the tubing is hooked up to a faucet and set on the garden. The similarity ends when you turn the faucet on. The sprinkler system automatically waters your entire garden without the need to trample and scramble throughout the area. No need to worry about slippery water puddles either, since the sprinkler system is set to keep the water only in your garden.
When you plan to make a sprinkler system, think of several shower heads put together then spread in various directions. The main purpose of a sprinkler is to spread water over a wide area, which eliminates the need to manually water plants. You can actually use a substitute item for the traditional sprinkler if you are pretty low on funds. Look at a pepper shaker and you will probably get the idea.
Materials Used:
garden hose
metal pipe (2 meters)
epoxy
pipe saw
tape measure
mechanical drill
1 box of rubber gaskets
10 pepper shaker toppers
Gather Your Materials and Equipment
Before you build your sprinkler system, you have to gather all the tools and materials that you will need. Go to a comprehensive hardware center and show a salesperson your list of requirements. Once he gathers everything that you need, you can go straight home and start the creation process of your sprinkler system.
The Creation Process
Get your garden hose and drill equidistant holes (about 1 foot apart) in the hose’s surface. Once the holes are drilled, cut the metal pipe into three-inch pipe strips. Affix a rubber gasket beneath each pipe strip then position them on every hole. Place pepper shaker toppers on top of the pipe strips that you plan to use. Now, apply epoxy to stick the pipe to the hose and the shaker topper to the pipe.
Run Tests
When the epoxy dries, run a few tests on your sprinkler system. Check if there are leaks in the makeshift sprinkler you installed and apply epoxy if necessary. Also, check how the water spreads through the pepper shaker toppers that you used. If you are not satisfied with the coverage area of your sprinkler, you can switch the sizes of your shaker toppers.
At this point, you have created a very cheap yet effective version of the sprinkler system. You can brag about your friends and your colleagues about your new creation. Just don’t join the show “American Inventor” with this invention; this writer would not be very happy.
