A Significant Gateway
Air traffic is crucial to the economic development of any location. Sea and land transportation are equally important; however, you can’t deny the bargaining power of air transportation. It’s definitely more comfortable to travel, for example, from London to Newark on an airplane. This is why Newark has high regards for its premier air hub: the Newark Liberty International Airport.
The Newark Liberty International Airport (NLIA) is a world-class airport that serves as one of the primary gateways into the NY metropolitan area and the Northeastern USA. The facility undertakes the great challenge of bringing passengers in and out of the city, but it is definitely up to the task. The NLIA is currently one of the country’s busiest airports in terms of passenger traffic.
Two Airports
To be specific, the NLIA is the second-busiest airport in the New York region, and the fourteenth-busiest in the country. The airport saw the arrival and departure of some 32 million passengers in 2004 alone. Not only that, but the airport also processed almost 1 million metric tons of mail and freight during the same year.
The NLIA is located within the city limits of Elizabeth and Newark, both in New Jersey, USA. Another airport, the JFK International Airport, is located in nearby New York City. Both airports are operated by the same airport authority. While NLIA is the second-busiest airport in the region, JFK ranks as the first. Originally called Idlewild Airport, the facility was later renamed in memory of the late John F. Kennedy.
Continental Airlines considers NLIA as its second-largest hub in the world. The airline operates within all of Terminal C and parts of Terminal A. Other notable air hubs in the area are the LaGuardia Airport, the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, and the Teterboro Airport.
