Wind is nothing but air in motion. When the energy of this air motion is used to generate power, it is known as wind energy. It is a kind of kinetic energy that can be converted into other forms of energy like mechanical or electricity. However, as with everything, it also has a few advantages and disadvantages. Let us have a quick look at the pros and cons of wind energy.
Wind EnergyPros of Wind Energy :
Wind is abundantly available in nature without any cost. In areas like hill top, sea shore, and other surfaces where there are no obstructions, wind speed is relatively high.
Unlike other resources, this resource does not produce any waste or pollution. Consumption of other resources like coal, oil, natural gas produce waste.
Wind is a permanent source of energy, which is not the case with most other resources.
With advancement in technology, it has now become cheaper to produce electricity through wind energy. In the years to come, the cost will reduce further, making wind one of the most important resources available on earth.
It is a great substitute of other resources which as fast depleting.
Pros and Cons of Wind Energy
Cons of Wind Energy :
Wind, although is abundantly available in some areas, it cannot be found at higher speed in areas that are surrounded by trees, buildings, etc. Besides, even in plain surfaces, the consistency is unreliable.
At locations where wind mills are placed at lower altitudes, animals and birds die many a times while trying to walk or fly between the blades.
In some areas where lightening is common, these tall wind turbines are often struck, manly due to the tall structure and hot surroundings.
In order to store wind energy, a battery is essential.
The wind turbines that are installed in residential areas do not cause much sound pollution. However, large, commercial wind turbines can produce sound as loud as a small jet engine.
Wind energy is a cheap source of electricity. However, the installation cost and the area required to install could be expensive.
