Despite being overcrowded and difficult living conditions, Bombay appeared to many as 'MAYAPURI- CITY OF DREAMS. (i) Thousands of people came here every year looking for a bright career in film industry. People from Lahore, Calcutta and Madras contributed to the film industry. Films were made on the life in countryside and therefore who all had come from Lahore found themselves as a character of those films. (ii) The first movie was made in 1896 which was actually a video of wrestling match in Bombay's Hanging Gardens shot by Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatwadekar. Soon after Dadasaheb Phalke made Raja Harishchandra (1913). After that there was no turning back. (iii) By 1925 Bombay had become India's film capital producing films for the national audience. 756 millions of rupees were invested and by 1987 the film industry employed 520,000 people. Therefore the city also proved to be a source of income. (iv) In the film 'SWARG' the situation is well explained where the lead hero goes to Bombay in search of a job and ultimately becomes an actor. Bombay films have contributed in a big way to produce an image or the city as a blend of dream and reality , of slums and star bungalows.
