How to Recycle a Computer
Advancement in technology has been so fast that before you know it, your computer is due for another upgrade. Many trade their old desktops for the newest laptop models, yet very few individuals know the proper way on how to recycle a computer.
Most people just leave their old computers out on the curb for the garbage collector while some smash them to bits. Before your computer becomes just a part of a landfill, here are a few steps you can take to recycle your computer the right way:
Return your PC.
If you would want to dispose and recycle a newly-purchased computer, you may want to try sending it back to a manufacturer. Most computer manufacturers have existing programs that allow you to mail your old computer to them for free. They will then recycle it given that you have recently purchased their products.
Some programs allow you to send them your PC after choosing a $20 computer recycling kit. They will ask for additional information such as the condition of your computer and current location. They will then send you a quote. Some companies may ask you to pay for handling and shipping but fees are usually reasonable.
Take a trip to the recycling center.
Search the Internet or the yellow pages for a recycling center in your area. These centers usually take not just computers but also other gadgets so bring everything at once to save on gas.
There are also many other government-run recycling centers available. Before going there, make sure you have all the information needed such as the type of computer, model number and any other items you wish to recycle such the mouse, printer and keyboard.
Donate it to charity.
If you want to make a difference, you may want to donate your working computer to a local school or charity. Many non-profit institutions such as schools, public agencies and charity groups are in need of computers for administrative and educational purposes. Computers are used not just to run organizations but also to train people, especially the disabled, and less fortunate youngsters.
