You can either put the club down or in the air in front of you when getting your grip.
With your left hand, hold the golf club in your fingers, not your palms.
The club should be touching the bottom of your little finger and positioned right on top of the first knuckle of your index finger.
Your left thumb should be a little off- centered on the back side of the shaft.
In address position, you should see the knuckles of your middle and index finger.Your thumb should be pointed toward your right shoulder.
Put your right hand in front of your left hand. Again, hold the club in your fingers and not your palms.
Position your right hand so that it covers your left thumb. The V formed by your right hand should be parallel to that of your left hand.
Tips:
There are different types of grip. Here are some that you might want to try to do.
An overlapping grip is ideal for golfers with big hands.
An interlocking grip is recommended for those with medium sized hands. Your right pinkie should be on the grip between the middle and forefinger of your other hand.
A ten finger grip is commonly used by players with small hands. Have all your fingers on the grip, just like when holding a baseball bat.
An address position is the position a golfer assumes when he’s ready to take a shot. You stand over the ball, put your club down, have your grip and prepare to swing.
Putting your grip on your palms will give you a weaker shot as it decreases your wrist action.
When taking a shot, keep in mind that your body and the golf club should work as a unit.
Golf seems like an easy game. Having a good knowledge on the basic techniques will help you play golf better. This starts with a good grip, just like what Ben Hogan said, good golf begins with a good grip.
