In the present age special computers or robots have been created to extract passwords. They keep trying with all possible passwords , until the correct password is found. In order to prevent the robot from entering, even after giving the password, one has to read and type a special text ( captcha) , which is understandable to a human, but a robot cannot solve the problem. The captcha method is mainly used to keep the website free from spam (unnecessary information).
