Soapnuts or soapberries are fruits from the sapindus shrub or tree. They can be used as an organic detergent. You tie a few inside a muslin bag and toss them right in with your wash. Remove the bag before the rinse cycle. They also crush the seeds to make soaps. THe seeds contain saponins, an natural surfactant, and thus work in similar fashion to soap or detergents to aid water in reaching and removing dirt and soils form clothing.
