Most managment companies have a worksheet or software that they use to do the pro-ration. The carpet age is taken into account, and so would your time living (paying rent) in the apartment. Since you paid a pet fee & pet deposit, both of which go to wear & tear and cleaning, that would also come off from the carpet pro rate fee. In other words, yes, the new company is most likely trying to bully you into paying for the new carpet. Fight! Write a letter stating all of the above in your details ( especially including the video, the vouching friends and the past apartments) and tell them you think someone forgot to pro rate for the age of the carpet from the time it was installed until the day you moved out.
