James Watt was born in Greenock, a small fishing village that became a busy town with a fleet of steamships. His grandfather Thomas Watt was a well known mathematician and local schoolmaster. James Watts father was a prominent citizen of Greenock. James Watt was intelligent, however due to poor health he was unable to attend school regularly. His early education was given by his parents. Later in life he had connections with the University of Glasgow.
