Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, better known to Batman fans around the world as Harley Quinn, is one of the most iconic female villains, although in some interpretations she straddles the antihero line. Perhaps what's most interesting about Harley Quinn is that although she's one of the premier members of Batman's rogues' gallery and has even carried her own title, she didn't get her start in comics. It all started with the animated series in the 90s. It was on September 11, 1992 that she appeared on Batman: The Animated Series in the jester-inspired Harley Quinn costume that is now so iconic. This costume has the split design (red on one side, black on the other) that mirrors Harley Quinn's own duality: intelligence versus insanity. The nice thing about this classic costume is that it is one of the only Harley Quinn costumes appropriate for young children who are fans of this character. The reason for that is that DC responded to the character's popularity by adding her to the comic books, and when they did, she became increasingly violent and sexualized. As a partner and love interest of the Joker, this was necessary to fit her into the grim and insane world of the Joker in the comic books. This sexuality eventually became a primary component of the character, a fact that has drawn a considerable amount of criticism on occasion. With Harley Quinn's increased sexuality came many changes to the classic Harley Quinn costume. It became much tighter and far more revealing, and when they ran out of trimming options, the DC creators did away with entirely. In its place came the Harley Quinn costumer that is popular today: corset, miniskirt and garters. This costume is extremely popular for "cosplay," and it is always prevalent at comic conventions and similar venues. Recently, DC re-launched their entire comic book line in a promotion called the "New 52." In this line, DC features her in the Suicide Squad book, and she boasts a new Harley Quinn costume, one that is clearly inspired from the immensely popular Arkham Asylum videogame. In this streamlined costume, she wears a corset, shorts, handless gloves and thigh-high boots. Both her hair and clothes stress the red-and-blue design from the original costume.
