How to Build a Platform BedPlatform beds are easy to build, even if you don't have much experience with woodworking. A simple frame covered with plywood, platform beds are versatile and can be built as high or low as you prefer. Box springs aren't usually used with platform beds, which makes them ideal for those with only a top mattress. Sleek and modern, platform beds are perfect for simple, classic decor. Follow these steps to build your own platform bed.Measure Your Mattress and Cut Your LumberFirst, measure your mattress. These measurements will be the dimensions of the frame of your bed. Use 1-inch lumber for the frame; you can make the frame as low as four inches or as high as 12 inches. Cut the lumber to the dimensions of the mattress.Put the Frame TogetherApply wood glue to the edges of your frame. Nail the frame together to create a large box. Measure the interior dimensions of the width of the box and cut two boards of this size for braces. Glue and nail the braces inside the frame to create three equal-sized sections inside the frame.Cut and Paint the PlatformThe platform, which will be screwed on top of the frame, should be larger than the frame. The exact size will depend on how much overhang you want. Use 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch plywood for the platform. Cut it to the dimensions you want and paint or stain it. To save time and materials, paint only the outside edges of the platform, since the bed will cover up the center.Paint and Move the Frame InsidePaint or stain the outside of the frame. Allow it to dry thoroughly, then carry it inside and position it where you want it.Attach the PlatformUse 1- to 1-1/4-inch screws to attach the platform to the frame. If you want to trim the platform, attach the trim with finishing nails. Put your mattress on the platform and make your bed.
