Building a Loft BedYou can create more floor space, while adding style and flair, to a kid's bedroom by building a loft bed.Place a twin bed mattress on the floor and use it as a guide to build the box frame that will hold it. Use two by six redwood or pine because treated lumber isn't safe. You will need to use screws or lag bolts when assembling the bed. They are stronger than nails. Leave a few inches on either side of the mattress for linens. Use plywood or oriented strand board as the base of the box. Prime and paint all pieces before assembly. Measure the height of the ceiling. You will want at least a three foot clearance from the top of the bed to the ceiling. Cut four support posts of equal length. Assemble the box. Position the support posts and secure them in place and strengthen them with horizontal braces. Lift the mattress box on top of the support posts and secure it with lag bolts. Construct a ladder out of two inch slats for added strength with a slant of approximately sixty degrees. Secure it to the bed frame with screws so it doesn't fall over and leave someone stranded in the bed.You are now free to use the space under the bed as a place for a bureau, a desk or the space can be used as a sitting or play area.
