Different tribes settled in valleys between the mountains and on the sea shores, creating independent city-states. The limited land of each meant that burgeoning populations could not be supported, and surpluses were shipped off to seize new land and establish new city-states for themselves. This resulted in over 2,000 Greek city-states spread around the Mediterranean and Black Sea Littorals.
