Glass roof. What are the pros and cons?
The construction of the glass roof is based on a metal frame with frames that are filled with glass. The dimensions and weight of the glasses are calculated in such a way as to let in maximum light through the structure, while ensuring complete safety. Such a roof structure must confidently withstand the loads generated by wind and snow.
The main advantages of glass roofs
First of all, people strive to complement the room with a glass roof because of their aesthetic appeal. A glass roof can often be found in modern public buildings. This architectural element has become an attribute of airports, train stations, shopping centers and office buildings. In private houses, this design is less common.
The advantage of such a roof is that it allows a lot of natural sunlight to enter the room. Translucency performs not only an aesthetic and image function, but also allows you to save on lighting.
Another interesting characteristic of a glass roof is its ability to conduct heat. Heat naturally enters the room through the glass, and less energy is spent on heating. There are also special low-emissivity glasses aimed at energy saving and retaining more heat inside the room than usual.
The glass roof of the house can be made in various forms (dome, pyramid and other options).
Disadvantages of glass roofs
Unfortunately, such wonderful designs have their drawbacks. Some of them are the flip side of their benefits. For example, significant amounts of ultraviolet radiation entering through transparent glass leads to the fact that furniture and furnishings in rooms fade faster.
High thermal conductivity can also be a disadvantage, in particular in summer. The room temperature may become too high, and it will be more difficult to hide from hot rays.
Some of the problems associated with the operation of such a roof are solved by the correct approach to the design and manufacture of the roof structure. If the problem of possible overheating of the premises is urgent, an additional ventilation system should be organized. Excess UV radiation can be dealt with by using special films that are applied to glass.
