It depends a lot on your budget, and what you’re looking for out of your bong - that is, what your needs are. Some people do best with those silicone bongs that can’t be broken, while others prefer the super-high-end thousand-dollar megabongs with all kinds of fancy features and attachments. Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle. Though its breakability is dismaying at times, I still prefer glass smoking pieces strongly - I simply do not buy pipes made of anything else, with a few rare exceptions that are stone (I own a gorgeous labradorite pipe; it’s downright magical) or maybe wood. Since I like steamrollers and other big pipes that allow for a good air-smoke mixture before it reaches your lungs, I also tend to prefer relatively large bongs. On the other hand, I also have a real soft spot for Zongs: Huge ones like that terrify me, though, because they’re so fragile. If it’s a Zong I prefer it to be smaller. (I also like the hooked look better than the basic zig-zag.) Something like this piece. I had a very similar one for a long time until it finally bit the dust: I like the hooked shape because it both looks cool and it can store a bit of water in each hook, which, again, looks cool. Doesn’t do anything practical, but it’s neat. The hooks are convenient grasping spots, too. It’s harder for it to just slip out of your hand even if you’ve got sweaty palms or (like me) dyspraxia. Also, the back-and-forth shape means the smoke travels further than it would in a straight-tubed bong of the same size. Helps compensate for the narrower tube. So if I were going to buy a bong, it’d probably be a Zong or Zong-a-like type thing. But that may not be what’s right for you. Bongs have a lot of possible optional traits, like percolators, ice catchers, and all manner of other fancy features. If you can afford it, these do improve the functionality in varying ways and can be fun. But to be honest, they’re not really necessary. The old school straight tube type works just fine. Another thing to consider might be a dab rig with an exchangeable attachment. This is a piece designed so that the bowl part can be removed, allowing for interchangeable parts. So you can have a flower bowl and a dab nail for the same piece.
