I have a question about rights to historical photos. I would like to use historical photos from the Brno City Archive on my website. These are always photographs that have already passed 70 years since the death of the last author, and have thus become free works. However, they claim that they are their property and that in the case of publication, I must have their consent or a certain amount paid. Do I really have to buy rights from them when they are free works? And do I have to have their consent if they are not real authors? Thank you for your opinions and possible answers.
