Release in the middle of a sentence

Hello. My friend is in jail. Before his imprisonment, he had a condition of 36 months, which was changed for him + he was sentenced to another 20 months. He is a first-time supporter. Somewhere I heard that the transformed condition, those 3 years must serve the whole and that only the punishment (20) can be halved. Is that true, or does it all add up and will there be half of those 56 months?
