How to Three Point Turn
A three-point turn is a helpful maneuver that skilled drivers need to master even before they conquer the road. While this driving technique might seem easy, an amateur driver might not be able to do it right the first time. Here’s how to successfully do a three-point turn out in the open road.
When Is It Necessary?
A three-point turn is necessary when you need to change the car’s direction, putting it in reverse and going the opposite way. It’s ideal for situations when the road is too narrow, and there’s no room for the car to make a proper U-turn. Keep in mind that this turn is only applicable depending on the shoulder and road width and the size of the car. It should also be done in a place with no traffic, otherwise it becomes a hindrance to other drivers.
Steps
Most driving students are required to perfect the three-point turn before they are allowed to pass the course. When done improperly, this can cause damage to the car. To practice this move, just follow these instructions.
Check the traffic. Before you arrive at the part of the road where you’re making the turn, look if there’s traffic behind and in front of you. Check your blind spot if necessary, before you pull over to the side and stop.
When you see that the coast is clear, and no cars are coming at you and behind you, turn to left or right, until you are perpendicular to the road.
Some drivers can’t make the car perpendicular to the road during the first try. If this happens, go back and forth several times, turning the steering wheel from one side to the other with every attempt.
When you’re perpendicular, set your car in reverse. Back up going straight across the other side of the road, as far as your car can go.
Put your car in first gear, then quickly check again if there’s traffic.
Turn the steering wheel all the way towards the direction you’re going. Step lightly on the gas, to finish the turn.
As you go forward in the lane, straighten the car, then continue driving.
