How to Do a Human Flag
The “human flag” stunt is very popular in physical activities like stunt running, parkour, and gymnastics. The seemingly simple act of grabbing a vertical pole while staying momentarily in the air horizontally is a spectacular stunt that makes for great photography, as well as a way to impress your friends, family, and spectators. Here are tips and steps you need to perform and perfect the human flag stunt.
Technique
Flags and banners fly horizontally from flagpoles; the aim of the human flag stunt is to mimic the movement of a flag or banner flying in the wind. In some instances it can be an exhibition move, like in gymnastics or performance art. Some specialists and athletes like freerunners and traceurs (people who perform parkour) use the human flag to move around obstacles.
To perform the human flag, follow these steps:
Gain momentum by running or sprinting towards a pole. Make sure that the pole is stable on both ends so that it can support your weight, and the force by which you grab it.
As you approach the pole within arm’s reach, grab the lower end of the pole.
Use your momentum to swing your body to the side as you grab the upper end of the pole. The swinging movement, coupled by your momentum as you approach the pole, should be enough for you to lift your legs off the ground and keep your body airborne.
Depending on your movement or the amount of momentum, you may be able to swing around the pole for a few revolutions before you complete the human flag stunt.
Like any stunt in gymnastics or parkour , the human flag requires a lot of upper body strength and excellent physical conditioning. With these steps, you can perfect the human flag stunt and move around the city in a whole new, cooler way.
