In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 as World Water Day. In 1992, the official proposal to observe the first World Water Day was raised in Agenda 21 of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first World Water Day was observed in 1993 and since then the importance of this day has been increasing. UN member states have dedicated the day to reflecting on UN water resources recommendations and development proposals within their respective territories. Every year on the occasion of World Water Day, a special program is held by any of the various organizations of the United Nations. Since its inception in 2003, the United Nations-World Water Day has been responsible for selecting the theme , message and key body of the day.
