How to Scotchguard
Scotchguard is a product used to protect fabric and furniture from stains. It also helps prevent dirt from settling in too deeply and wearing due to high traffic in carpets or other fabrics. Imagine spilling orange juice on top of your carpet and the carpet not absorbing the orange liquid! Buy a can of Scotchguard from your nearest hardware store. Choose the one that goes with whatever you want to scotchguard.
Make sure that the furniture or fabric that you are about to Scotchguard is clean and dry. Using Scotchguard on a dirty fabric can make the dirt or stains harder to remove after. Scotchguard is best used on brand new items.
Check how the Scotchguard works with your fabric or furniture by spraying a small amount one one inconspicious corner of the fabric or furniture. Wait for a few minutes to over an hour. If the Scotchgurad doesn’t cause color bleeding or discoloration, you can move on to the next step.
Bring the fabric or furniture in a well-ventilated area. Place it on several layers of newspapers. Start applying the Scotchguard by holding the spray can ten inches away from the surface layer. Apply the Scotchguard in a sweeping motion until you’ve covered the whole area.
Keep the fabric or furniture in a well-ventilated area protected from the elements overnight. Make sure that you put them somewhere they won’t be disturbed. Let the Scotchguard dry for at least 36 hours.
Re-apply two or three coats of Scotchguard by repeating Steps 4 and 5. Articles of clothing like Ugg boots should have Scotchguard reapplied every season.
