You are quite the charmer according to your friends. Through the years, you have been known for going on many dates and for your sculpture-like physique. You want nothing more than to bask underneath the summer sun, shirtless, as hordes of girls stare and giggle in your direction.
The beach is too far away. Your current situation leaves you no choice but to build summer’s ultimate sun-bathing tool, the swimming pool. Sounds like a gargantuan task, right? If you have big muscles and an even bigger love for carpentry and irrigation systems, it is entirely manageable.
Before you get to build such a structure, you will have to figure out a way to fit your pool on your property. It will require some landscaping and a lot of renovation. You will erase portions of your garden, your driveway and your garage if you don’t have enough space on your property to fit your swimming pool.
As for the swimming pool itself, you will need to do a lot of digging and tile installation as well as install a new irrigation section in your home. Doing all that alone will probably take more than a year and that is far too long for any water-basking, fun-loving individual like you to wait. It is highly advisable that you get professional help if you plan to build your own swimming pool.
When selecting a good location, always remember that every pool has an outside area that allows people to walk around or sunbathe. You might fall into the trap of simply picturing your pool in a certain area without the other important details that make the whole swimming experience fun, convenient and comfortable.
Allot a couple of meters for the outside area of the pool to give people ample room for their pool-related activities. If your proposed pool area is going to take the space of a large area in your property, hire one or two carpenters to take care of the remodeling and renovations.
To start off the creation of your swimming pool, outline your pool’s dimensions (4.9m x 9.6m is the average pool size of American homes). Dig the entire outlined area in gradually descending fashion. If you are a champion swimmer or diver, the deepest point of your pool should probably be around 12 – 15 feet. If you are a regular Joe, a deep point of six to eight feet will probably do.
Once you finish digging, hire a few plumbers to take care of the pool’s irrigation system since doing it requires extensive knowledge of piping systems. You have to wait for the plumbers to give you the go signal to proceed with the next step. Any wrong move can damage the newly installed piping system.
With the irrigation system done, you can now cover the dug area with cement. Remember to leave a little space for the pipes that will drain and add water. On the shallow side of your pool, create stairs leading to the surface using cement. The set of steps will help kids and weak swimmers test the depths of your pool gradually.
When you are done cementing the area, install a layer of pool tiles and several underwater lights throughout the pool. It is advisable that you hire an electrician so that he can properly route electricity to your pool and advise you on where to place your underwater lights. After completing this step, you can do some tests on your pool to check if there are problems with the piping system, the drainage system and the electrical system. If all goes well, then your ordeal is almost over.
At this point, you have to build an outside area that is slip-free and can compliment the pool’s beauty. Cover the entire outside area with cement, and then slightly elevate the outside border of the swimming pool. Now, pebble wash the entire outside area.
Install a pair of swimming pool bars above your pool’s submerged stairs and another near the middle portion of your pool. These bars provide an easy exit from the pool and can be lifesavers for weak swimmers. They also work like crown jewels because the moment you completely install them, you have finished building your pool.
After the entire pool-making shebang, you can reward yourself by taking a day off and holding a pool party. All your efforts will be rewarded with rounds of alcohol and groups of scantily clad people. Ah, summer is the best season, indeed, now that you have a swimming pool.
