If a thin portion of a cast is away from the riser, that portion freezes quickly. Due to this rapid solidification, it is not possible to supply the required molten metal from the riser, so the short or thin part is under size. To eliminate this defect, more molten metal is added in a balanced section which is then discarded by machining. This is called padding.
