The main cause of ocean currents is wind. Air flow creates friction with the surface water of the ocean and creates gyre / spiral pattern in the water for friction . Ocean water moves in a certain direction , it is called ocean current. Ocean currents can be divided into two parts according to the temperature variation. Namely- (a) warm current and (b) cold current. Warm currents: As the temperature rises in the equatorial region, the water becomes lighter and the lighter water flows through the surface of the ocean towards the cool polar region as surface flow. Such currents are called warm currents . Cold currents: Cold and heavy water from the polar region flows through the lower part of the water towards the equatorial tropics. Such currents are called cold currents .
