: Access time to main memory is the appropriate time to address the memory and read or write a word from it. The access time is the time from the moment a word's address appears in the memory register to the moment that word (from the main memory) enters the memory data register, or from the memory data register until the word is written in the main memory. The shorter the time, the better, the faster the computer works . In auxiliary memory, the access time is usually the time when the appropriate address is added.
