The Belfort Declaration (dated November 2, 1918) is a letter written by Arthur James Belfort, the British Foreign Secretary, to Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community. The letter was given to him to send to an organization called the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. His Majesty's government view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country. One week later, on 9 November 1918, the letter was published in the newspaper. The original is preserved in the British Library.
