The popular computer game Minecraft has riveted millions to their computer screens. Since 2009, people of all ages have been playing Minecraft, many of them becoming easily addicted. Over 21 million people have bought the game on PC and Mac, with another purchase every 10 seconds. Many more play on mobile devices and home games consoles. So, what is this thing? Minecraft is a computer game where the world is made of blocks, and the graphics are extremely pixelated. Players can choose to play in survival mode, where they must gather resources and build a shelter to hide from monsters, which come out at night. They can also play on creative mode, in which players have access to infinite resources, so that they can fly around and build amazing creations. Multiplayer is also available. One of the biggest factors contributing to Minecraft’s popularity is its flexibility of use. Players can, of course, play in survival mode like any other game. However, many also choose to play in creative mode where, hence the name, most of the players’ creativity is expressed. Players become famous by building massive mansions, palaces, castles, and much more. Redstone allows players to create interesting circuits, and some take on massive challenges, such as building a 16-bit computer. Another aspect that made Minecraft so addicting is, in Survival mode, the never-ending chain of tasks. First, players must collect wood, to craft planks and a stick, so that they can make a pickaxe, so that they can mine coal, so that they can make torches and get stone, so that they can get better tools, so that they can go mining for even stronger minerals, so that they can….well you get the idea: Minecraft is never-ending, and you need a timeframe of at least 30 minutes to even complete a few small tasks. There is no repeating of levels, and every time you die, you lose all of your possessions, but not what you built. The last characteristic that made Minecraft such a success was that it fulfills one of our biggest wishes: the desire to discover the unknown and unexplored, and the desire to have control over our own life. We all want a place where we are alone, where we are the kings, the explorers, and the builders. Today, Minecraft is more than just a computer game. It is a culture. Minecraft is the most played game on YouTube. It has its own language, that is, words like “Creeper” and “Mooshroom”. Mojang, the company that created the game, sells clothing, plush dolls, and other products relating to Minecraft. Every year, Mojang also hosts an event called the MineCon, where fellow Minecrafters meets and enjoy games, contests, and exhibits showcasing Mojang’s current projects on the game. Minecraft is like a contagious disease, but one people are happy to have.
