Irrigation is necessary in India because of : 1. Uneven distribution of rainfall. Rainfall is confined to short duration of 3-4 months in the rainy season. The rest of the year is more or less dry. Provision of irrigation can make multiple cropping possible. 2. High yielding variety of crops require regular moisture to increase farm production-Crops like rice, jute, sugarcane require large amounts of water, which can be met only through irrigation.
