I am not familiar with VLC. I use mediamonkey for all file conversions and audio file management. Media monkey will convert nearly any file format to any other file format. I save my CD files as FLACs. I then convert those flacs to mp3s for use on my player while keeping the original flac. There is an option when you convert to replace the original file. Good for when you convert wavs to flacs. Mediamonkey also converts flacs directly to CDs for compilations. It’s a very helpful audio file management application.
