Just a couple of things occurred to me, although I am sure there are a lot more. Most people don’t know my mother died when I was a child, and that at 23, I’ve been living without a mother for the last 12 years. I tend not to tell new people, even if mothers are brought up in the conversation, not because I’m uncomfortable with it, but because I think it makes other people uncomfortable. You’d be amazed at the amount of times I’ve nodded along when people have talked about “parents” (plural) or said something about my mum. It comes up a lot, and I don’t like to correct people or make an issue of it. Also, most people I meet now don’t know I used to be fat.
