What makes GSM phones so much better than CDMA phones?

Hmmmm… I know very little about the cell technology; but I recall people complaining that the iPhone is GSM when it first came out, so I was under the impression that GSM was frowned upon. All I know for sure is that GSM is what makes the annoying speaker interference sound. I am curious to learn more…
