In places where I have a comma, an “and” or a break of some sort, I will consider whether a period and new sentence may be better. For example: I am going to the hairdresser to get my hair done, going home to rest and then going to the party, after stopping to pick up some dessert for the hostess, who doesn’t necessarily want dessert but that’s what I like to bring in case none of the other food is good. I’ll change that to “I’m going to the hairdresser to get my hair done and then going home. I’m going to pick up some dessert and then go to the party. The hostess doesn’t necessarily want me to bring anything, but that’s what I do. That way I know if there’s nothing else, I will have a good dessert.” I know it’s not a technical explanation, but I hope it helps.
