Application server or Web server

*Adds intermediate layer between client and the database server

*Runs application programs and stores business rules

Clients contain GUI interfaces and some additional applicationspecific business rules. The intermediate server accepts requests the clients, processes the requests and sends database commands to the database server and then acts as a conduit for passing (partially processed data from the database server to the clients, when it may be processed further and filtered to be presented to users in GUI format. Thus the user interfaces, application rules and the database acts as three tier.
