Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October, and has been celebrated annually in Canada since 1879. In the United States, it is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November, and has been celebrated annually in the US since 1863. In both countries, sporadic days of Thanksgiving have been celebrated in previous years, sometimes nationwide, sometimes local. Harvest festivals are common worldwide, but in the US and Canada, they have been incorporated into the national civil calendar and grown in importance compared to similar regional and local harvest festivals elsewhere.
