According to TheWeek.com, Oscar nominees are selected by members of the Academy's 15 branches, who vote in their own fields. In other words, directors pick the Best Director nominees, cinematographers select the Best Cinematography nominees, etc. Each voter selects five nominees in order of preference. All Academy members get to nominate films for Best Picture. The auditing firm of Price Waterhouse determines the results and issues the top five nominees in each category. After the nominations are revealed, Academy members are then allowed to vote in each category on the final ballot.
