After a person has the gastric bypass surgery performed, they will need to follow a special diet after gastric bypass surgery. One to two days after the surgery, the patient is allowed to drink only liquids, usually in the form of broth, milk, Gelatin and juice. For the next two to four weeks, it is recommended that the patient follows a pureed diet and only consume foods that are similar to a paste or thick liquid in consistency. Over the next two months, the patient will then be able to eat solid foods that have a soft consistency. After this period of time, the patient can gradually progress to solid foods, although they will find that they will be unable to tolerate certain food items.
