Banding is not gastric bypass. In a procedure like the "Lap Band," which is a trademarked product, a small belt or band is inserted through the abdominal wall and fastened around the stomach to create a small pouch that limits the capacity for food. This procedure requires four small incisions in the abdominal wall. Bypass is a much more dramatic procedure in which part of the stomach is bypass surgically. There are different bypass procedures.
