The Internal Revenue Service 1040 tax form is the standard tax form for individuals or married couples who are filing tax returns. The IRS 1040 has various adaptations also in the form of schedules and each schedule is used for a particular set of tax deductions. For those who do their own tax returns, it is important to know exactly which 1040 form that may be needed. For most single filers it is unnecessary to use a scheduled, or long form return. An IRS 1040 EZ will work for the simple single filer. The IRS 1040 A is longer, but can still be managed, especially with some current e-file programs. The IRS 1040 A form is relatively simple, but accuracy is very important for all of the information on the form. This is especially true for the social security numbers that are reported. On forms that include the names of dependent children, it is also equally as important that these dependents can be claimed within the scope of the dependency rules. Also included will be line item entries for filing status, single or married, and a check box for those who claim head of household. It is important to make sure the proper deductions are being claimed. The standard exemption of single with no dependents is different from the standard exemption for those who claim head of household or married status. The IRS 1040 forms also record all pertinent income information provided by the employer on the annual W-2 statement of earnings. It is important to have this information available for both the individual who is attempting to file on their own or to present to a professional tax preparer. For those attempting to file without assistance or filing a 1040 EZ, all of the numerical deductions fields are listed on the right edge of the form and the electronic filing programs perform the calculations. Another part of the 1040 tax form that is critical is the signature. Many individuals have completed and filed the tax return, only to have it sent back because of failure to actually sign the form. For electronic filers, the form is digitally signed and will include your preparers identification also in the event that the form is filed with a professional tax agency. There are also 1040 forms for those who are estimating tax, IRS 1040 ES, and schedules A through D for specific allowances. Always make sure that the proper schedule of IRS 1040 is being used.
