First of all, bear in mind that the Roman Republic was not likepresent day republics. The officials, although elected by thepeople, had different responsibilities than our present dayofficials. Each official had his own area of influence and a higherranking official could veto the proposals of a lower ranking one. Atribune of the plebs could veto everyone except a dictator. In thisway the Romans had their checks and balances.
